Book Review by a 5 y.o.

Miss J gives two thumbs-up to Sean Covey's book for kids, The 7 Habits of Happy Kids.

I was surprised when she picked it up at Wyndham library and held on to the book for weeks and weeks, reading and re-reading it, so that it had to be renewed more than once.

Not her usual Charlie and Lola or Elephant and Piggy kind of book.

More impressively, she sought to apply what she had learned.

When I asked her what she was doing or told her to do something (e.g. "J, go do your homework"), she would answer, "But Mummy, I'm balancing my life."

Then she would go on to explain. For instance, if she had been reading, she would have balanced her mind. So the next activity would be to balance her body: by exercising, for instance. Or she might balance her soul by finding something quiet to do.

I am struck by how a little child can engage so meaningfully with a book and inspired by what this means for the rest of us.

If a 5-year-old can get what it means to balance one's life, what excuse do we have?
